The second town as far as historical and cultural importance is concerned is Siena. The distance between Il Colombaio and this city is about 15 kilometers (9 miles). Beyond being one of the most beautiful and enchanting town, Siena is famous for its medieval traditions such as the Il Palio, a horse race that takes place two times a year (July 2nd & August 16th). It takes place in the main square called "Piazza il Campo". During this race the "Contrade" sections of the town run for the honour of being the keeper of the standard rich in symbols and significance. Siena is also famous for her cathedral "the Duomo", which floor made with different and wonderful mosaics made with natural stones, is known as one of the most beautiful marble floors in the world.
San Gimignano is a little jewerly of the medieval architecture. It is located at about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from us, a small town built on top of a rocky hill in which in the ancient times, the rich and noble owners were competing among themselves to build the highest tower they could, from this comes the name, the town of the 7 towers.
Montalcino is a small medieval town, at about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from here, famous for its wine "Brunello di Montalcino", one of the most precious wines of the world. These are the towns of major historical and cultural interest not far than one hour drive from Il Colombaio. We can add Arezzo (It.Site) with its Market of Antiques which takes place every 1st Saturday and Sunday of the month. This is the most important market of Italy. Volterra is a beautiful medieval town surrounded by a very impressive landscape.
